Class 1 Learning Pathway

The New Replacement Program for MELT Training for Truck Drivers in Alberta

Class 1 Learning Pathway is Alberta's new program for obtaining Class 1 Drivers License . This replaces the previous Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) Program. This new program start from 1st April, 2025 and is designed to provide thorough training to new commercial truck drivers in a more progressive and structured manner.

Key Changes from MELT to Class 1 Learning Pathway

The major change in this program is the tiered leaning approach, which allows new drivers to gain experience progressively before receiving their full class 1 drivers license. Unlike MELT program which required completing all training upfront, this new program enables truck drivers to operate vehicles with specific restructions before progressively getting there unrestricted complete class 1 drivers license.

Class 1 Leaning Pathway Tiers

The new learning pathway consists of the following Tiers

Tier 1

Class 1 Entry Program

  • This is the very first step in getting your class 1 truck drivers License which includes 40 hours of online training
  • This training includes introduction to commercial driving, safety regulations and industry best practices .
  • After completing your Tier-1 online training you are ready to take your knowledge test.

$250.00 + GST

Fees is paid directly to the Ministry of Transportation, Alberta

Advance Truck Driving School will assist candidates in understanding and completing tier 1.

Tier 2

Class 1 Core Leaning Program

  • In Core Leaning Program candidates get 60 hours of hands-on training in-yard and in-cab, covering vehicle operations, safety procedures and driving skills.
  • After completing this Core Leaning Program, candidates can obtain their Provincial Restricted Class-1 Drivers License. This license allows you to operate trucks within Alberta with specific restrictions.

Tier 3

Class 1 Competence Building Program

  • Once you have your Provincial Restricted Class 1 Licence, you are ready to proceed to the next Tier-3: Competence Building Program.
  • During this program, you will get 17-25 hours of one-on-one driving training.
  • During this phase you focuses on enhancing your skills and gaining real-world truck driving experience.
  • Once this tier-3 is completed your restrictions are removed from your Class 1 truck drivers licence and you are ready to operate as an inter-provincial class 1 truck driver.
